Scholarships are available from individual colleges and universities as well as from private and public sources. Start searching for scholarships as early as possible in your application process. It may take time to complete applications, since they often require essays and recommendations. There are many helpful websites and resources to help you find scholarship money. Your high school guidance or college counseling office should be your first stop for information on how and where to search for scholarships. Ask for a list of legitimate, free, online scholarship search websites.

Focus your efforts on those scholarships where you have the greatest chance of meeting the requirements. Your guidance counselor can provide you with information on, and sometimes even nominate you for, scholarships offered by local groups and individuals. Define yourself and identify organizations looking to provide support for students like you, based on your religious affiliation, heritage, military affiliation and family employers, among other criteria. Explore state scholarships if you’re considering attending college in the state in which you legally reside. Once you’ve applied for scholarships, be on the lookout for responses or requests for any follow-up actions on your part.
